It was dawn.
Jadeclaw had been sitting vigil for the first time since he had become a warrior moons ago. No one had died, no, nothing of that horrible sort. Jadeclaw was just content to offer to guard the entrance to their camp that night. Strangely, the young cat was not too tired; the first time he'd sat vigil, he was exhausted the next day. Thankfully, the nest in the warriors den was much more comfortable then the one in the apprentices den.
Jadeclaw's mind wandered... would he ever be a mentor? He really hadn't been a warrior for very long. It was too soon, he supposed, but Jadeclaw was confident that he was one of the most skilled and loyal members of RiverClan. Perhaps he would chat with Nightstar about it later.... His mind continued to wander, this time, his mind focusing on his past. The days that he had been raised inside the human cages...
A shudder rippled down Jadeclaw's spine as a morning breeze picked up. It was cold, and felt sharp against his thin fur. Thankfully, it was not leaf-bare, but green-leaf, the hottest and most pleasant time of the year, or, at least that was how Jadeclaw felt. He supposed the summers were warmer, but with his black fur, the rays of the sun became almost unbearable.
Another breeze picked up, and Jadeclaw watched as leaves from other parts of the territory flew into the river, making small ripples in the water before floating away with the current. He stared, entranced for a while. Never before had he thought that he would be able to swim, or that he would enjoy it; in fact, Jadeclaw remembered that when he first came to RiverClan territory, the idea of crossing the river, as he was still just a kit, was terrifying. Thankfully, one of the Clan cats, the one that acted as his foster mother, carried him across. A purr escaped Jadeclaw's maw as his adopted mom came to mind: Sableheart. Unfortunately, the thoughts turned grim as his actual mother came to mind....
"StarClan, what was her name? Can I not even remember her anymore?" Jadeclaw muttered to himself. He hung his head in shame. Everything that had preceded his life in the Clan was a blur to him now. Perhaps his mind had blocked it out, as it was quite traumatizing, however, the young tom supposed it was better this way. All his loyalties lay with RiverClan now.
And Jadeclaw was so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn't even hear footsteps coming from behind him...

Nightstar padded out of her den. she stretched out her front legs and arched her back. Things had been tough lately, and she hadn't been getting enough sleep. There wasn't enough prey to go around, and she sighed as she recalled the days when Riverclan had enough fresh kill for every cat in the clan, and some left over. Nightstar shook the thought from her head and continued on out into the camp. it was important that she stayed strong for the clan. Polarice would have to organize patrols soon. or maybe she could do that, and give Polarice a break. the cat had been working very hard lately and she was greatfull to have such a wonderful deputy. Nightstar glanced toward the camp entrance and saw Jadeclaw, the young warrior who was ordered to watch the camp entrance for the night. She would have to give him an apprentice the next time there were new apprentices. He was a very hard-working tom, and she knew that he deserved an apprentice. The clan could use another strong warrior that could apprentice the kits that would run this camp someday. Nightstar remembered when Jadeclaw had first come to Riverclan. Sableheart had walked into camp with a tiny kit dangling from her maw, and not every cat agreed that the kit should be brought up in Riverclan. But Sableheart had insisted that she could foster the kit, and raise him as her own. Nightstar had been the deputy back then, and she had agreed that the kit should be raised in Riverclan. The leader had agreed, and it was agreed that Jadekit would be raised to be a warrior. And now, as he guarded the camp entrance, she knew that the clan had made the right decision. He had grown up to be a wonderful warrior, and was one of the best warriors in the clan. She padded up behind Jadeclaw and as she stopped, the wind blew her dark beautiful fur around a little bit and leaves swirled around her. she listened to the river flowing around the camp, and finally she spoke to the warrior. "Good morning, Jadeclaw," she told the warrior. "You can be dismissed from guarding the camp entrance now an get some rest. you deserve it." Nightstar told Jadeclaw with her voice full of warmth.

Jadeclaw felt the presence of Nightstar before she spoke to him, but made no motion of breaking his focus. In fact, if anything, Jadeclaw focused harder, so his leader would understand how dedicated he was to the Clan. Despite the fact that most of the cats in the Clan trusted the tom by now, he was still always trying to prove himself....
And yet, what Nightstar said next still surprised him. Dismissed from guarding the camp? Jadeclaw's ears flicked back and forth a few times before turning to face his leader and saying, "That's quite alright Nightstar. I'll wait till some more cats are out and about before I leave my spot. Besides, I'm not tired."
He dipped his head to her after that, and scooted over in case she wanted to join him. When she approached though, Jadeclaw couldn't help but tense up. Here he was, next to his leader... having a casual conversation? Jadeclaw was not used to such things, except for with the occasional apprentice and his adopted sister and mother. With a sigh, the young tom forced his fur to lay flat as he spoke, "These poisoned rivers are troublesome. I wonder what's caused such a thing?"
But Jadeclaw had a bad feeling that whatever was making the RiverClan cat's lives miserable was not something to be messed with. Something more powerful then even the four Clans united could deal with....

Jadeclaw seemed to think over what Nightstar said for a moment before he answered her. "That's quite alright Nightstar. I'll wait till some more cats are out and about before I leave my spot. Besides, I'm not tired." Jadeclaw told her. Nightstar dipped her head in understanding. it was perfectly fine if he didn't want to leave his post yet. after all, it was his choice. Jadeclaw scooted over a little bit to make room for Nightstar. she took up his offer and sat down next to him. Nightstar felt Jadeclaw tense up, but she ignored it. Any young warrior would be nervous to be this close to his leader. Nightstar stared out at the river for a while before Jadeclaw sighed, and then spoke. "These poisoned rivers are troublesome. I wonder what's caused such a thing?" Jadeclaw asked Nightstar. Nightstar lowered her head in sadness. The poisoned rivers were something that even she could not figure out. "Yes Jadeclaw, the poisoned rivers are quite troublesome. I need to send out some cats to look for anything that might link to the poison. If you want, you can go look as well. I will tell Polarice to include you in the group. How does that sound to you?" Nightstar asked Jadeclaw. She didn't tell him this, but if he did prove himself on this mission he would definitely be eligible for an apprentice. She hoped that he could figure this out by himself.

"I'm always happy to help, Nightstar," he answered slowly, nodding as he spoke. He paused for a while, thinking carefully, "Though, the river splits off up ahead, and wanders partly through ThunderClan. We will have to get their permission to trod through their territory, and with tensions running high, I have doubts that Sabrestar will let us. I don't like him at all. There's something vile about him, don't you agree?"
Jadeclaw stopped after that, realizing that he may have been disrespectful in some way. Though the Clans were rivals, Jadeclaw knew the leaders were to always be respected and treated well. Surely, Sabrestar was doing fine leading his Clan.... and yet, the words of a young Warrior from WindClan, Rustleheart, came back to him. It was at the last gathering, and he had overheard the tomcat whispering under his breath
"Mouse-brain! Moonshadow, don't show your disdain towards their leader so clearly."
Jadeclaw had followed Rustleheart's gaze to the WindClan deputy, and saw him glaring heatedly at Sabrestar. A shiver had run through his spine at that. Moonshadow was known as the softest cat in all the Clans, and if he disliked Sabrestar, something was wrong.... But maybe it was just something between WindClan and ThunderClan, so then it would be none of his business. Oh, it was just all too frustrating to think about!
